A history of lameness and low body condition score is associated with reduced digital cushion volume, measured by magnetic resonance imaging, in dairy cattle

چکیده

Claw horn lesions (CHL) are the result of a failing functional anatomy hoof in dairy cows. The digital cushion is understood to be vital structure prevention CHL. have previously been shown lead pathological change pedal bone; however, their effects on unknown. primary aim this study was examine associations between history CHL through an animal's life and at slaughter using magnetic resonance imaging. retrospective cohort resulted scanning 102 pairs hindfeet, collected from adult Holstein cows culled research herd, 3-Tesla research-grade imaging scanner. Volume fat measurements were calculated for each within claw modified Dixon Quant sequence. Animal-level variables constructed around animals' lactating lifetime, with lameness scores body condition score least every 2 wk. combined volume lateral claws used as outcome variable multivariable linear models. negatively associated number events or recorded. Furthermore, animals >3, later lactation, greater weight more likely higher claws. We propose that observations made current range factors broadly genetic, developmental, disease-related inputs. Our understanding how we can select genetically robust precondition before first calving needs improved reduce risk future cattle. optimal treatment regimens effect may recurrence lactation lactations.

Factors associated with lameness in dairy cattle

An intervention trial by Hedges and others (2001) studying 1109 cow-years, in which every lame cow was examined and recorded by a veterinary surgeon, determined the four main causes of lameness to be sole ulcers, white line disease, digital dermatitis and interdigital necrobacillosis (‘foul’ or ‘foot rot’) (see graph on the right). Sole ulcers and white line disease are defects of the hoof and,...

Evaluation of body condition score measured throughout lactation as an indicator of fertility in dairy cattle.

Body condition score (BCS) records of primiparous Holstein cows were analyzed both as a single measure per animal and as repeated measures per sire of cow. The former resulted in a single, average, genetic evaluation for each sire, and the latter resulted in separate genetic evaluations per day of lactation. Repeated measure analysis yielded genetic correlations of less than unity between days ...

Low body condition predisposes cattle to lameness: An 8-year study of one dairy herd.

Lameness in dairy cows is a multifactorial and progressive disease with complex interactions between risk factors contributing to its occurrence. Detailed records were obtained from one United Kingdom dairy herd over an 8-yr period. Weekly locomotion scores were used to classify cows as not lame (score 1 to 2), mildly lame (score 3) and severely lame (score 4 to 5). These outcomes were used to ...

Unravelling the temporal association between lameness and body condition score in dairy cattle using a multistate modelling approach.

Recent studies have reported associations between lameness and body condition score (BCS) in dairy cattle, however the impact of change in the dynamics of BCS on both lameness occurrence and recovery is currently unknown. The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate the effect of change in BCS on the transitions from the non-lame to lame, and lame to non-lame states. A total of 731 cow...
